What is budgeting?

At its core, budgeting is simply a plan of where you put your money…

How much you’re making, versus how much you’re spending and saving.

The equilibrium between income and expenses.

The origin of the word “budget” comes from the Old French word bougette, which, in the early 15th century, meant a “leather pouch” or “small bag or sack.” (etymonline.com)

How can Budget Senpai help?

This website is dedicated to sharing information that empowers people to live healthy lives, free of financial worry. We teach best practices, show you how to use free budgeting software, and walk through the step by step process of how to build and use a solid budget.

Who is the Budget Senpai?

Currently, it’s just me, Daniel Dodsworth (@doubledods on Instagram). Now, there’s a couple disclaimers… One, I never went to school for this stuff. Two, I don’t claim to be a financial expert, and this is not financial advice. But, I’ve always been good with money, even and especially when I’m barely getting paid. I’ve survived layoffs, low wages, unexpected expenses, etc. My extremely fastidious nature has kept me relatively unscathed over the years. Double bookkeeping is natural to me, and it’s how I manage all my personal expenses. This is something I’ve done since childhood. I’ve also helped countless people get a simple budget going.

Now that I have all these years of experience, I decided to start a website and YouTube channel to help promote financial independence. This will be achieved simply through education. I enjoy teaching people new things, and especially enjoy disrupting the oppressive nature of a framework built by greed that traps many in a cycle of debt in order to squeeze labor value out of them. Too many working class people are struggling to pay the bills.

Budget Senpai aims to be a valuable resource in the fight against “inflation,” corporate greed, predatory loans, etc. Honestly, I just want people to enjoy life and not worry about money!

Why the name?

Senpai is a Japanese honorific that informally means “teacher,” or something like a “senior” in a work or school environment. Budget, obviously, comes from the main thing we teach: budgeting your money and developing good financial habits.

Budget Senpai just made sense as a name. It’s a little quirky, and rooted in anime culture, but that’s the way I like it. You don’t need to be a nerd to use this site though. The messages are for everyone.
